Formed in 1892 after merger of Newcastle West End and Newcastle East End, which was founded in 1881 by local cricket players, Newcastle United were one of the dominant forces in the First Division during the first half of the twentieth century. Joining the Second Division in 1893-94, the club won promotion to the First Division for the first time in 1898. During seven seasons from 1903-04, the club won the league thrice and finished fourth in alternate seasons, an interesting run of form. They dropped to the Championship in 2009 after sixteen consecutive seasons in the Premier League but returned immediately. After a plunge to the lower level at the end of 2015-16, the Magpies proved their top-tier credentials by winning immediate promotion after winning the league in 2016-17.
